For whom is Summer Bridge?
Summer Bridge is for incoming UCI freshmen who are first generation college students, low-income, or disabled, and who demonstrate an academic need that can be met by the program. Participation is by invitation only.
How much does Summer Bridge cost?
Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant will be eligible to receive a supplemental Summer Bridge Financial Aid Award, which, combined with Summer Bridge program funds, will cover instruction, summer session fees, room and board, books, and other program activities.
All students are responsible for a non-refundable $100.00 registration fee, payable once your application is accepted. The supplemental Summer Bridge Financial Award is in addition to the academic year award. It will not reduce your 2008-2009 academic year award. Note: Summer Bridge applicants must complete a 2007-2008 FAFSA (in addition to the 2008-2009 FAFSA) by May 2, 2008, in order to be considered for selection for the program.
How long is Summer Bridge?
Summer Bridge runs for five weeks, from June 21, 2008, through July 24, 2008.
Are participants required to live in the University’s residence halls?
Yes, the residential experience is an essential aspect of the program.
Will students be allowed to go home on weekends?
In general, no. There are weekend programs and activities that are part of
Summer Bridge, although there will be limited family visitation on selected
weekends.
Who supervises the students while they are living in the residence halls?
There are live-in Resident Assistants and a live-in Resident Advisor. The
professional staff of Student Academic Advancement Services administers the
residential staff and the overall program.
Should Summer Bridge students also sign-up for SPOP?
No, students selected for Summer Bridge should not sign-up for SPOP. All Summer Bridge students will receive placement testing, dedicated academic advising, and register for fall courses during Summer Bridge. Also, successful participants will receive 6-10 units of academic credit (depending on class schedule).
Are medical services
available on campus?
The Student Health Center provides out-patient clinic services on a
fee-for-services basis only. Student Academic Advancement Services and Summer
Bridge will not take responsibility for students’ health care costs.
You will need to provide your own health care insurance and otherwise assume
financial responsibility for any medical services rendered during the program.
Can students bring a car to campus?
No, students may not bring a car to campus.
How will students be evaluated?
Each student will be evaluated by his or her instructor, and a final grade will be assigned in each course. Students will receive 6-10 units of academic credit (depending on class schedule) for successful participation in the program.
What are the criteria for successful completion of Summer Bridge?
The following will be required for students participating in Summer Bridge:
- Regular attendance of all required classes and workshops (including tutorials).
- Completion of all assignments, examinations, and other requirements.
- Following the rules of residence hall living and the rules of the UCI Student Conduct Code.
- Adhering to the conditions of all other agreements made with Student Academic Services or other offices of the University.
